A certain woman, weighed down in sin, stood behind the Savior weeping. Wishing to be free of her burden, she knelt down and began to wash her Lord's feet. Weeping all the while, she wiped His holy feet with her hair and He heard the unspoken prayer in her heart.1 This is the setting for the theme song of the new CD, Song of the Heart. Powerful messages and moments have been put to stirring melodies, bringing the scriptures to life.
Each song is drenched with scripture references. There are messages to strengthen the youth and to encourage and give hope to parents. There are messages to lift the heavy hearts of people journeying through this life, messages of hope and faith.
He is Near comes from the scripture and youth theme, “… search diligently, pray always and be believing…”2 Road to Jericho is a song of a man traveling on his own way. The words from the chorus include President Monson's admonition to gladden hearts and do good deeds on our ‘road to Jericho’, like the Good Samaritan.3
Some songs come from familiar stories like the 2,000 stripling warriors.4 However, these surprising lyrics are not from the son’s eyes, but from his mother: “Have I taught him? Have I been there? Does he know on whom to rely?” And her young, faithful son replies: “Yes, I've Been Taught by My Mother.” Other songs come from less familiar stories. Safely Home tells of Jared and his family from the Book of Enoch.5 Fearful of the curse that could befall his family, he urges his brother to pray unto the Lord to not confound their language. In our day we too pray that we won't be confused but that we will be able to speak and discern the spiritual language of the Holy Ghost. Safely Home is a song of our Heavenly Father's tender mercies as he leads us on despite the winds that blow.
Songs from both albums, I’ve Been Taught by My Mother and Song of the Heart, make a powerful impact in a Relief Society, priesthood or youth lesson. This unique scripture-centered music portrays the ancient spiritual message and then does what Nephi directs, that is to liken the scriptures to ourselves.
You will find yourself turning to the scriptures after hearing these songs and singing them after you have turned to these depictions from the scriptures. The words to the songs encourage and inspire. The beautiful music will enrich your lessons, your Sunday listening and your everyday efforts to be “in the world but not of the world.” The harmony of Sisters, the instrumental melodies and the piano accompaniment combine to praise and testify of the power and love of our Savior, Jesus Christ. It will heal, calm and edify its listeners. Gather In; dwell in peace, at last.
